An hour later the same digger was spotted next to a vehicle with no roof in the car park of Westwood Cross shopping centre in Margate Road, Broadstairs.

As police arrived, two vehicles made off from the scene and inquiries to find the people inside are ongoing.

Detective Sergeant Jason Booth said: "This type of suspicious behaviour is consistent with an attempt to steal a cash machine, so it is pleasing that on this occasion we were able to get there first and prevent a possible crime from taking place.

"We are always very grateful when members of the public report things to us that seem out of place, such as a digger being driven in the middle of the night and being parked next to a car with no roof.

"I would always encourage people to get in touch by calling 101 if they see or hear anything suspicious, as they could be helping to stop an offence from being committed.

"We would also like to hear from anyone with information about this particular incident. Please call the appeal line on 01843 222289 quoting reference 23-0120.

"Alternatively call Kent Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111."
