Turner Prize 2019 exhibition to be held at Margate's Turner Contemporary

The Turner Prize nominations and winner will feature in a display in Thanet this year.

The eyes of the art world will turn to Margate in September when the 2019 entries go on display at the Turner Contemporary.

It was announced last year the gallery would announce the winner - but is now going to be the home of the prize for all four of the shortlisted artists' pieces.

Every other year the prize leaves its regular home at the Tate Britain and goes on tour around the country.

The seafront gallery will also host the awards ceremony in December.

The prize and the Margate gallery are both named after English painter JMW Turner - who was said to be both controversial and innovative for his time during the 18th and 19th centuries and wanted to establish a prize for young artists.

A spokesman for the Turner Contemporary said: "Four of the most exciting artists working right now are shortlisted to win the prize based on an outstanding exhibition that has taken place in the previous year. The names of these artists will be announced in Spring 2019.

"The prize is renowned for triggering debates around new developments in contemporary British art.

"The work of the four artists will feature in the exhibition at Turner Contemporary and the winner will be announced at a major awards ceremony in December 2019."

The exhibition will open on September 28, 2019 and run until January 12, 2020.
