The bodies of two dogs have been discovered at a property following an early morning call to police.

Officers were sent to Prestedge Avenue, Ramsgate, at 12.15am on Friday after receiving reports of an "animal welfare issue".

It is understood the dogs were a Staffordshire bull terrier and an English bull terrier.

Police spokesman Richard Spillett says the matter has been referred to the RSPCA, but officers will assist any investigation.

The charity says it is "unable to discuss complaints about specific people or addresses and what action may have been taken".

Spokesman Amy De-Keyzer added: "We understand how frustrating that is for animal lovers but releasing information could prejudice an investigation or could lead to us being fined.

“We are so grateful to people who report suspected animal suffering to us and we would like to reassure people we will always look into and, if necessary, investigate any complaints made to us about animal welfare.”
