'Electrical fire' at Thanet Visitor Centre leads to power outage

An 'electrical fire' at a council building has led to power outages in a seaside town.

Two fire engines rushed to Droit House, which currently hosts Thanet Visitor Information Centre on Margate Pier, shortly after 10am.

It comes after smoke was reported coming from an electrical cupboard.

The crews found no signs of fire but continued to monitor the electricity supply cables, which had overheated, until UK Power Networks arrived on scene.

Thanet District Council (TDC), says the facility, which is owned by Kent County Council, will remain closed for the rest of today.

A spokeswoman said "EDF are in attendance and we hope to have power reconnected later this evening.

"We have emailed tenants on Margate Harbour Arm to inform them of the ongoing issue with electrical supply.

"Updates will be posted on our social media channels when available, and we have also issued specific advice from our Environmental Health team to food businesses who are experiencing loss of power. "

UK Power Networks says its engineer were called shortly before 1pm today to turn off supplies to 29 customers in The Parade area of Margate.

It says this was needed so it could work safely on the network following the fire.

A spokesman added: "Engineers restored supplies to all but one customer at 4.35pm and work is continuing to reconnect the remaining supply as quickly as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

TDC hopes to reopen the visitor centre at 10am tomorrow.
