Fire breaks out in fields near Joss Bay, Broadstairs

Firefighters have tackled a fire that broke out in a corn field near the Kent coast - causing smoke to billow onto a nearby beach.

Fire crews were called to the blaze near Joss Bay, in Broadstairs, just before 1.30pm on Wednesday.

The fire is believed to have started in a field off Elmwood Avenue, which leads from the town to Joss Bay.

A KentOnline reporter who was at the scene reported seeing smoke blowing down to the beach, while on the seafront a number of onlookers stood by watching.

Four fire engines were sent to the scene, where firefighters worked to bring the flames and smoke under control.

A spokesman said: "Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to a fire in a field of cut and standing corn off of Elmwood Avenue in Broadstairs.

"Four fire engines and an all-terrain vehicle were sent to the scene and crews used a hose reel jet, beaters and a fire fogging unit to extinguish the blaze."

The fire was extinguished by about 3.30pm.

There are no reported casualties and the cause is not known.
