Thick smoke seen near Westwood Cross shopping centre, Broadstairs

Firefighters have been tackling a blaze at a cardboard compactor at Westwood Cross shopping complex.

The fire started in a yard area away from the main buildings.

A single crew was called just after noon today, using a hose reel to put out the blaze by 12.35pm.

Pictures uploaded to social media showed a large smoke cloud near the complex.

Hundreds of shoppers are said to have been evacuated.

Tim Furrier said: "Total evacuation of Westwood Cross with alarms going off."
