Man with axe in Ramsgate town centre arrested after police investigation

Police have arrested a man after he was allegedly spotted wielding an axe while walking through a town centre.

Witnesses say the man was spotted swinging the weapon around in Ramsgate this afternoon.

A 43-year-old man is in custody and the axe has been seized by police.

Officers were called at 3pm following a report a man was seen in the High Street.

A spokesman for Kent Police says no injuries have been reported.

According to witnesses the man was also spotted in King Street, Harbour Street and Albion Hill.

One reported the incident as being "very scary" and another said the man was walking while "swinging it in his hand".

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called to reports of a man seen with an axe in the High Street, Ramsgate at around 3pm on Wednesday, April 17.

"Officers attended and arrested a 43-year-old man on suspicion of the possession of an offensive weapon. An axe was also seized.

"There were no reports of any injuries and the man remains in police custody."
