Police officer attacked in Margate suffers facial injuries

A policeman attacked in the street after confronting a man acting suspiciously has suffered facial injuries, it has been revealed.

The officer was taken to hospital after the assault in Addington Street, Margate, at about 4.10pm yesterday.

Police say he was on patrol and had stopped to speak to a man whose behaviour was suspicious, before he was attacked.

The scene was cordoned off in the hours that followed.

A police spokesman said: "The officer was subjected to an assault and other patrols attended the scene, where a 26-year-old man, of no fixed address, was arrested on suspicion of assault and theft."

The suspect remains in custody this morning, while the officer has since been discharged from hospital.
