Two hurt as cars crash

A CAR was left wedged between railings and a shop front following a collision near the Pantiles, Tunbridge Wells, late last night. Two people were injured in the incident.

Firefighters who attended the scene praised a trainee nurse who helped give first aid before ambulances arrived to remove two casualties to hospital.

The collision occurred just before 11.30pm on the A267 Nevill Street at a pelican crossing linking The Pantiles and Chapel Place, and involved a Ford Fiesta and a Volkswagen Golf.

The impact caused the Golf to mount the pavement and become wedged between railings and Bateman’s opticians, the front window of which was smashed by pelican lights which toppled over in the collision.

Sub officer John Wheeler, of Tunbridge Wells fire station, said: "We had two appliances at the scene. Being close to a busy junction the accident inevitably caused some traffic congestion.

"A student nurse who was there helped treat and bandage one of the Golf’s occupants who had been injured, and did a fine job before ambulances arrived and took him to hospital."

It is understood the Fiesta driver suffered minor injuries, but was also taken to hospital for treatment."

West Kent police are now investigating the cause of the accident.
