Kent Highways warned: "Carriageway now closed between J1a and J1b due to an RTC. Emergency services in attendance. Traffic being diverted off at J1a. Expect delays in the area."

Highways England added: "Emergency services require this main carriageway to be closed for a time so all traffic will be coming off at #J1A #LittlebrookBridge and so the entry slip at that junction will also be closed."

In an update just before 10am Highways England said in a Tweet: "Unfortunately the traffic collision has proved to be serious. We are working to get the trapped traffic cleared as soon as possible."

Kent Police said later: "We were called at 8.04am to reports that a car had overturned on the clockwise carriageway of the M25 near to the junction J1A, Dartford.

"Officers are currently at the scene with South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue. One lane of the carriageway is currently closed. The driver of the car has been taken to a London hospital for treatment."
