Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites spotted in sky above Folkestone

A line of mysterious lights caught on camera above a popular Kent park this evening are believed to be Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites.

Folkestone resident Lauren Bailey filmed the unusual phenomenon from the town’s Radnor Park at about 7.45pm.

The pattern of lights matches that of Starlink satellites, which are launched by Musk’s company SpaceX.

According to Starlink’s website, it is “the world's first and largest satellite constellation using a low Earth orbit to deliver broadband internet capable of supporting streaming, online gaming, video calls and more”.

The lights have been spotted elsewhere in Kent and at various locations across the country this evening.

Some social media users have joked that it was “Santa on a test drive” or some “new ULEZ cameras”.

Musk - who also owns social media site X, formerly known as Twitter - is the richest man in the world with a total net worth of £168 billion, according to Bloomberg.

He previously revealed his goal for the £7 billion pound Starlink project is to deliver superfast broadband internet around the world by "enveloping the Earth" with up to 42,000 satellites.

Musk's company was given the green light in 2020 to challenge the UK's terrestrial internet providers and other companies such as BT.
