Men chased from Fiveash Road, Gravesend, after attempted break-in

Two would-be burglars were chased from the scene of an attempted break-in yesterday after being confronted by neighbours.

The pair arrived in Fiveash Road, off Dover Road, Gravesend, and broke into a garage in a garden, before forcing entry to the front door of the home between 10.30am and 11.30am.

But when they were confronted by neighbours, the duo were forced to flee empty handed - leaping over garden fences before escaping on a motorbike.

Now the occupant of the property is warning others to be vigilant.

"The police said quite a lot of it has been going on," said the occupant, who did not wish to be identified. I was in the garden last week and saw them come up the road and turn around - I thought it was strange because no one comes up this road.

"They were checking it out for a week. Then they turned up in the morning yesterday and parked the bike around the corner.

"They went into the garage and then they came to the front door of the house - they tried to crowbar the front door.

"As they crowbarred the door and walked in but the neighbours came down the garden and said 'what are you doing'?"

With their path blocked out of the front garden, the burglars had to escape over several garden fences to get back to their bike.

"Their only way out was to jump over a six and a half foot fence," he added. "They jumped over eight or nine gardens, then they got on a bike - it was waiting at the end of an alley.

"It looked like a stolen bike - like a superbike. It was mat black. They ended up getting away."

He said it wasn't the first time his property had been targeted, and as such he was left unshaken by the events.

"It's Gravesend - you sort of half expect it," he added. "You're half sort of waiting for it.

"It's happened lots of times before but they've never come in the house before - it's a bit different. They've come in with a tool and it could have got nasty quite quickly."

Kent Police said officers were called at 11.38am on Monday 4 November 2019 to reports of an attempted burglary in progress at a residential property in Five Ash Road, Gravesend.

A statement added: "The suspects left the scene prior to police attendance. Officers carried out a thorough search of the local area but were unable to locate those responsible."
