A prisoner was found hanging in his cell by staff at a Kent prison.

Sherzad Jamal Muhamed was found at Elmley Prison on Sheppey at around 5.30am on Sunday and later declared dead by the prison doctor.

A prison spokesman said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr Muhamed at this time.

"As with all deaths in custody, the Prison and Probation Ombudsman will carry out an investigation.

"Mr Muhamed was a convicted prisoner serving life imprisonment for manslaughter and was not subject to an open suicide and self-harm document."
