Loki, Bridgerton, and The Witcher among TV shows filmed in Kent in 2022

In a year described as "exceptional" by the Kent Film Office, locations across the county have featured in many popular productions - from Netflix hit Bridgerton and the Disney+ Marvel series Loki, to BBC favourites Eastenders and Call the Midwife.

Film crews have been spotted all over Kent this year, including in Maidstone, Margate, and Chatham, and while some of the films and TV shows have hit our screens already, many are lined up for release next year.

With the help of the Kent Film Office, we took a look at the films shot across the county in 2022, and now we have compiled a list of TV shows to watch out for if you want to spot some familiar locations, filmed in Kent this year.

Some of the specific locations have been kept under wraps, so it'll be down to you to spot them in the new year.

PRU - multiple locations

This BBC Three comedy series, which was released as a box set on BBC iPlayer on March 26 this year, filmed in Kent in January and February.

The programme is told through the eyes of four teenagers stuck in a Pupil Referral Unit, a school for excluded children.

In the show's third episode, the characters climb up Blue Bell Hill at the picnic site to plant their flag.

They also visit The George and Dragon Pub in Ightham, where the teens take part in some karaoke.

Carroty Wood Recreation Centre, just outside of Tonbridge, is also featured when the children are taken camping in the woods.

This Sky original, based on the 2018 BAFTA-winning short of the same name, sees eldest sister Trish, played by Freema Agyeman, pregnant and expecting a daughter.

Her sisters Clare and Leila, along with their mum and nan, rally to support her but other sister Mel, played by Lily Allen in her debut TV role, returns unexpectedly and threatens the family's stability.

As its name suggests, the comedy drama is based in Margate and large portions of the show were filmed there.

It will air on Sky Comedy and streaming service NOW sometime in 2023.

The Great (Series 3) - multiple locations

Large portions of the upcoming third season of this historical comedy drama, which is loosely based on the rise to power of Catherine the Great, Empress of All Russia and her plot to kill her depraved husband, were filmed in Kent.

The show stars Elle Fanning as Empress Catherine II and Nicholas Hoult as Emperor Peter III, and will air on Hulu in the US and Starzplay and Channel 4 in the UK.

Scenes from the series, which has not had an announced release date as of yet, were filmed at a private estate in Sevenoaks, as well as Cobham Wood near Rochester, and at the Chatham Dockyard.

Call the Midwife (Series 12 and Christmas special)

Scenes from the upcoming special airing on Christmas Day, and the 12th series beginning on New Year's Day, were filmed in Kent.

It is well-known that many exterior scenes from the BBC period drama are filmed at Chatham's Historic Dockyard, although the Kent filming locations for the upcoming episodes have not been revealed.

The series follows a group of midwives in East London in the late 50s and 60s, and its first series in 2012 marked it as BBC One's most successful new drama series since 2001.

Eastenders (Christmas special)

Filming for the upcoming special of the long-running BBC soap, airing on Christmas Day, also features scenes shot in Kent.

While the Kent Film Office did not disclose the location, it is believed the exit of one iconic character was filmed in Deal earlier this year.

With a number of dramatic storylines set for some beloved Albert Square residents, including Charlie Brooks' Janine Butcher and Steve McFadden's Phil Mitchell, the special is sure to treat viewers this Christmas.

Treason

Film crews for the six-part spy drama starring Charlie Cox were spotted filming in Maidstone, outside County Hall in June, using the Grade-II building as a double to a Westminster building.

The thriller follows MI6 deputy Adam Lawrence who begins to question his entire life when he reunites with a Russian spy.

He must negotiate his relationships with spy Kara and his wife Maddy, while the three try to expose each other's secrets.

The series is set to premiere on Netflix on Monday, December 26.

Palomino

Filming for this female-led thriller series about a British teacher caught up in a supermarket robbery in Spain began in September.

Erin Collantes' life threatens to unravel when one of the robbers claims to recognise her. In Palomino, a town of secrets, she must fight to clear her name and protect her family.

While the location has not been revealed, filming for the show was speculated to have taken place at Folkestone harbour after Netflix crews were spotted there, claiming to be filming Palomino.

An air date for the Netflix show has not yet been announced.

Horrible Histories (Series 10)

While the Kent filming locations for the upcoming series have not been revealed, previous episodes of the children's show have been filmed at Chatham's Historic Dockyard.

In series 8 and 9, scenes were filmed around the Ropery, Officers Terrace, The Old Pay Office, Commissioners House and the submarine HMS Ocelot. A release date has not been announced.

The historical sketch-comedy series initially aired on CBBC from 2009 to 2014, and was revived the following year with a new cast.

Based on the best-selling book series by Terry Deary, the show features sketches on a range of historical eras and civilisations, with parodies of TV shows such as Wife Swap, Come Dine With Me, and Masterchef.

Invasion (Series 2)

This Apple TV+ series explores an alien invasion through the perspectives of people across the world.

While part of the new series was filmed in Kent, filming locations for the first season included New York, Japan, Morocco, and Greenwich.

The first series was released last October, and it was renewed for a second series last December although no release date has been given.

The Gold

With a star-studded cast featuring Hugh Bonneville, Dominic Cooper, Jack Lowden and Charlotte Spencer, this BBC One drama is inspired by the iconic true story of the Brink's-Mat robbery, when six armed men broke into a security depot near Heathrow Airport in 1983.

At the time, the theft was the biggest in world history after the thieves stumbled upon gold bullion worth £26m.

No release date has yet been revealed.

The Three-Body Problem

This science fiction series based on the novel of the same name by Liu Cixin is being taken on by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with co-creator and writer Alexander Woo.

The Netflix adaptation stars Eiza González and Benedict Wong, and follows a Chinese physicist who is asked to infiltrate a group known as The Frontiers of Science, after a string of suicides among its members.

While no specific date has been given, the show is expected to hit the streaming platform sometime in 2023.

Bridgerton (Series 3)

When the first season of this period drama hit Netflix on Christmas Day 2020, the show reached number one in the UK, and its two existing seasons are still some of the most streamed on the service.

Based on the novels by Julia Quinn, the show follows the Bridgerton siblings, with every season focused on a different sibling's romance.

Some scenes from the first season, which follows the romance between Phoebe Dynevor's Daphne Bridgerton and Regé-Jean Page's Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings, were shot at the Historic Dockyard in Chatham.

Although the location has not been revealed, the upcoming third season centering on Colin Bridgerton, played by Luke Newton, and his relationship with Nicola Coughlan's Penelope Featherington, will also feature scenes filmed in Kent.

There has been no date announced yet for when the next instalment is set to hit Netflix.

The Witcher (Series 3)

The third season of the hit Netflix show, and the final season to star Henry Cavill, features scenes filmed in Kent, although the exact location of filming has not been disclosed.

The fantasy drama, which is based on the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, follows the eponymous "witcher", the monster-hunter Geralt of Rivia, in a fictional, medieval-inspired land known as the Continent.

The third season is expected to premiere in summer 2023.

The Ballad of Renegade Nell

This action adventure Disney+ series sees Louisa Harland playing Nell Jackson, a young woman in the 18th century who finds herself framed for murder.

The orphan is forced into a life of highway robbery with her two sisters, Roxanne and George, before realising fate has led her to the power struggle raging across the battlefields of Europe.

No release date has been set yet for the eight-episode series, which is penned by Gentleman Jack creator Sally Wainwright.

Jerk (Series 3)

Jerk is a BBC3 black comedy series centering on a man with cerebral palsy who attempts to use his condition to his advantage.

It stars and is co-written by Tim Renkow, who has the condition himself.

The show currently has two seasons, and was renewed for its third this year, although no specific release date has been given.

Loki (Series 2)

The much-awaited second season of this Disney+ show contains scenes filmed at the Historic Dockyard Chatham.

Tom Hiddleston, starring as the titular Marvel character, was spotted on set with costar Owen Wilson this July.

The series, which is part of Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), will arrive on Disney+ in mid-2023.

My Lady Jane

This Amazon satirical comedic fantasy series re-imagines the rise and reign of Lady Jane Grey, played by Emily Bader, in an adaptation of the 2016 novels.

The cast includes many famous names such as Dominic Cooper as Lord Seymour, Rob Brydon as Lord Dudley, and Jim Broadbent as the Duke of Leicester.

The series is projected to air in 2023 however no specific date has yet been announced.

Secret Invasion

Another Marvel series set to hit Disney+ in 2023 is this upcoming production based on the comics storyline of the same name.

Starring Samuel L Jackson, Emilie Clarke, and Olivia Colman, among other famous names, the show sees a faction of shape-shifting aliens named the Skrulls which have infiltrated all aspects of life on Earth.

Also part of Phase Five of the MCU, the series will consist of six episodes.
