Lydd Town scored four second-half goals to draw 4-4 with Rusthall but manager Scott Porter wasn’t happy as their SCEFL Premier Division play-off hopes fade – they play Punjab United tonight

A thrilling fightback was a dream for the neutral at Lydd Town on Saturday - but home manager Scott Porter wasn’t happy.

The Lydders stormed back from 4-0 down at half-time at home to lowly Rusthall in the Southern Counties East League Premier Division, equalising in stoppage time, but the one point wasn’t enough. It was the second Saturday in a row they had failed to win at home, having also been held by Tunbridge Wells.

Saturday’s draw comes ahead of a tough run of games for Porter’s men.

They host Punjab United tonight (Wednesday) before heading to title favourites Deal on Saturday and welcoming second-placed Glebe the following week.

Porter said: “It was the same old story, really, individual mistakes and not taking our chances. That has summed up the time I have been there.

“I emphasised that on Saturday, we need to cut the mistakes out and the goals we gave away are from our mistakes, they are not worldies.

“We did that four times in the first half on Saturday and it doesn’t matter if they are top of the league or at the bottom, we can’t afford to make those mistakes.

“You can’t give teams 4-0 head starts at any level.

“But we should have won the game, we hit the bar, the post, they had one break in the second half where Dicko (Charlie Dickens) cleared it off the line, but it is just mistakes which have cost us and it’s a massive struggle now to get into the play-offs.

“We should have beaten Tunbridge Wells but didn't take our chances. That’s four points [dropped] from two games and we can’t afford to be making the mistakes we have been at this level.”

Lydd’s second-half response got going when Dickens got one back four minutes in. A Kenny Pogue double followed and Jamahl King equalised deep into stoppage time.

“That papered over the cracks to be honest,” said the manager.

“I wasn’t happy at full-time, I wasn't happy on Saturday at all. No disrespect to Rusthall, but we should be beating teams like that.

“Fair play, we came back and drew the game, but I expect to be winning those games.

“We have had two games at home where we would have expected to win and now we have a tough game Wednesday and then Deal and Glebe, not easy.

“We have made it really hard for ourselves.”
