Firefighters remain at scene of haystack fire in field off Minster Road in Westgate-on-Sea

A large haystack which caught alight in a field by a residential street continues to smoke a day on.

One fire engine remains at the scene off Minster Road in Westgate-on-Sea after crews were called to the blaze at about 2.45am yesterday.

The fire service is urging people travelling past the incident to not stop to take photos, as it is causing "unnecessary risk to road users".

Those living and working nearby are still advised to keep windows and doors closed due to the level of smoke in the area.

The haystack - said to be made up of about 7,000 bales - is burning out under controlled conditions after firefighters worked through the night yesterday to bring the blaze under control.

At its height, four fire engines were at the scene.
