Try axe throwing and archery at Penshurst Place this winter with Joe's Bows

A historic house in Kent is partnering with TripAdvisor's No.1 falconry firm to give visitors a range of outdoor sporting activities including axe throwing.

Penshurst Place has joined forces with family-run firm Joe’s Bows, which provides the summer falconry shows at the site near Edenbridge, for the new winter attraction, which is open while the house itself is closed.

On selected Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays through to March there will be falconry days, archery and axe-throwing provided by the Hernhill-based company.

You can try a one-hour experience or a half day, with one hour sessions costing £35 per person and a half day being from £55.

The collaboration has received support and guidance from the Visit Kent Experience Fund, which was introduced to help Kent businesses create new, innovative products for local people to enjoy.

Gemma Raines from Joe’s Bows, said: “The glorious setting at Penshurst Place will bring out your inner Robin Hood, as you grab your quiver and bow, heading into woodland that is steeped in history to the medieval ages, so it seems a fitting location to get a grasp on the sports of the time."

Lucy McLeod, head of marketing at Penshurst Place, added: “This exciting new collaboration... is a great new string to our bow, creating even more experiences for visitors to enjoy despite the house and gardens being closed.”

Although the house and 11 acres of walled gardens are closed until the spring, the surrounding public footpaths across its parkland and woodlands are open all year round. The estate also launched a new woodland trail last year.

The Porcupine Pantry Café and gift shop are also open.

Deirdre Wells, Visit Kent chief executive, added: “The continued collaborative efforts of organisations across the region is critical in championing the recovery of our sector during a particularly challenging year. This partnership between Penshurst Place and Joe’s Bows is a fantastic example."
