Quentin Blake exhibition opens at Lovelys Gallery in Cliftonville, near Margate

The work of illustrator Quentin Blake, who was born in Kent, has gone on show in the county.

Inspired by the London gallery House of Illustration’s exhibition Seven Kinds of Magic, which showcases Quentin’s career, Lovelys Gallery in Cliftonville has launched its own, featuring limited edition prints in its Annex Gallery.

Born in Sidcup, Quentin was evacuated during the war, before going to Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School, and was taught English by JH Walsh, who inspired him.

He started drawing as a child, and his first published illustrations as an adult were in the Spectator and Punch. He went on to work with author Roald Dahl for 13 years.

The 83-year-old's works have been the images for bedtime stories around the world for generations. However, he also writes and was the children’s laureate from 1999 to 2001.

Visitors to Lovelys will be able to admire the characters, used to illustrate Dahl’s familiar characters, but also sit and read some of the books Quentin illustrated, and learn more about his artistic career.

The exhibition in Northdown Road runs until Saturday, May 14.
