Eat My Words: We review Cheran’s Bakery, recently featured in Netflix series The Crown, in Rochester

When looking for somewhere to grab a bite on Sunday, the rain put a damper on things and myself and my brunch buddy decided that a ‘grab and go’ option would be a safer bet.

We strolled - quickly, to beat the rain - along Rochester High Street and came across Cheran’s Bakery. I thought, if it’s good enough for The Crown cast, it’s good enough for me.

For those who missed it, Netflix series The Crown rolled into Rochester last week to film scenes on the high street, which was transformed to look like Windsor for the upcoming sixth season.

The recently-opened Cheran’s Bakery was one of the shopfronts that underwent a makeover to portray King Charles and Camilla’s wedding in 2005 and, according to the owner on social media, Dominic West and co. left with more than 500 sweet treats from her shop.

I could see why this bakery, which has now opened three locations in Kent and is set to open a fourth in Faversham this weekend, caught the eye of its celebrity customers as we arrived at its pale pink door.

Everything about the bakery is Instagrammable, from its clean, contemporary aesthetic to the influencer-friendly pink-and-gold colour scheme - and, of course, the mouth-watering treats on display.

The bakery sells high-end, luxury baked goods that take the local bakery to the next level.

The giant stuffed cookies topped with chocolate bars, doorstop-thick brownies of all different flavours and towering tea cakes covered in lashings of toppings would be enough to tempt any sweet-toothed customer.

The staff, who were obviously used to people taking their time when ordering, were very friendly and helpful, asking customers which flavours they enjoyed and offering suggestions on what to pick.

The server also informed the people in front of us that, if they liked their cookies warm and gooey, they can be microwaved for 20 seconds before eating - a tip we noted for later.

We finally opted for a Milky Way and Magic Stars stuffed cookie, which cost £4.79, and a Lotus Biscoff brownie for £3.99.

To wash it down, we also chose an ice cream milkshake each from a board of ‘unlimited’ flavour options.

We went for a Terry’s Chocolate Orange and Kinder Bueno shake, each costing £5.49, topped with free whipped cream and chocolate sauce.

The service was quick and our treats were handed over to us in a pretty branded box - a bit superfluous for our small order but a nice touch and, again, perfect for an Instagram snap.

Thanks to the not-so-nice weather, we kept our goodies in the box and headed straight back to the car to take them home.

The shakes, however, didn’t last the journey. Once we both tried a sip, they were impossible to put down. Smooth, creamy and tasting just like our chocolate bars of choice, there were no complaints - in fact, there was barely any speaking at all as we were so preoccupied with slurping.

Remembering the staff member’s words of wisdom, we microwaved our cookie and brownie at home before tucking in.

This was, it turns out, a tip well worth taking on board as it took the stuffed cookie, which I’m sure would have been delicious either way, to a whole new level.

The Milky Way bar and Magic Stars on top kept their shape, but the chocolate inside had melted into a gooey, moreish mess that turned the humble cookie into the most indulgent treat.

Now that I've come down from my sugar high, I can definitely confirm that Cheran’s Bakery is good enough for royalty - or TV royalty, at least.

Out of five:

Food: Indulgent, chocolate-y and delicious, if you’re a fan of desserts it’s a must-try *****

Drink: I love milkshakes so this was always going to be a hit, but I’d be tempted to try something slightly less sugary next time ****

Decor: An Instagrammer’s dream, very chic and pleasing to the eye ***

Staff: The staff behind the counter were great at advising customers and handed over our order quickly ****

Price: Just a few pennies short of £20 for a cookie, brownie and two shakes sounds steep but it all tasted so good that I didn’t feel shortchanged ***
