Snow Play by CBeebies presenter Patrick Lynch comes to the Gulbenkian Theatre, Canterbury

All of the passion and performance of CBeebies presenter Patrick Lynch goes into the show Snow Play.

Patrick, who presents Razzle Dazzle and Lets Celebrate on the children’s BBC channel, is also the artistic director of Lyngo Theatre, which is behind the seasonal show coming to Canterbury’s Gulbenkian Theatre.

Snow Play poses the question: what would you do if winter decided to stay and moved into your house, creating icicles in the kitchen and snow all over your bed?

The character of Mr Green – who was originally played by Patrick himself when the show opened in London in 2011 – represents spring. When he comes back from holiday to find Mr White (winter) in his house, it’s the start of a struggle as Mr White covers the whole house in snow and Mr Green does everything to get him outside into the garden.

The audience gets stuck in, too, with their own snow – making a snowman and joining in with a massive snowball fight.

While Patrick won’t be appearing in the cast at Canterbury, he will be visiting the city ahead of the performances from Tuesday, December 9, to Sunday, December 21.

“I will be setting up and then will let the very seasoned performers carry it on in Canterbury,” said the 42-year-old.

“Snow Play started in the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith, where we were asked to do a Christmas show in 2011. Our director and I quickly came up with the idea of the battle between winter and spring. I was Mr Green, the straight man, because Mr White is the mischievous one. There’s a lot of comic potential.”

“CBeebies came about through my work on stage,” Patrick told What’s On.

“I was in London doing Lyngo Theatre’s first show Tom Thumb, which we made in 2003, and there was a producer from the BBC looking around for new people. I was lucky enough that he liked what I did and it went from there, really.

“They’re intense periods of work that then continue without you, because they then go on TV which is a strange feeling, but you get more well known; I get recognised by people with small children or the long-term unemployed.

“Mine is a very low-level form of celebrity, I’m on the Z list, so it’s not intrusive and occasionally you get people who give you a compliment, which is lovely.

“But the theatre work has always been the bread and butter, and the TV is the jam. Lyngo Theatre do about 200 performances a year, which means that we’re always very busy.”

Snow Play is at the Gulbenkian Theatre, Canterbury, from Tuesday, December 9 to Sunday, December 21. Tickets cost £8.50. Visit www.thegulbenkian.co.uk or call 01227 769075.
