Bastille end their 2019 tour at Margate Winter Gardens review

"It's a Monday - but let's pretend it's not," Bastille frontman Dan Smith told the crowd at Margate Winter Gardens at the start of their gig last night.

And he and the band, with the crowd - both swept along and also part of it all - proceeded to do just that.

It was the final date of their final tour of 2019, of the decade, and, he told the crowd, "possibly for quite a while".

The Brit Award winners and Grammy-nominated band, who released their third album Doom Days in the summer and extended This Got Out of Hand edition this month, showed why they have notched up those awards and have the following they have.

It may have been a wild, windy Monday night in Margate, but once the music started, it didn't matter what was happening outside.

Their spectacularly lit set had at its centre a turning circle, which Dan jumped on and off, danced around, and, later, laid on a sofa emblazoned with Doom Days on its back.

His performance was electric, not stopping for a second, engaging with the crowd and waving at people; appearing at the front of the circle seats at one point and, later, getting in the thick of it, making his way through the middle of the crowd, around the venue, and high-fiving people as he went.

Much of the material for the first half came from the new album, ending on a jumping Joy, before the second half featured a range of the band's biggest hits and album tracks, including a rocked-up version of the REO Speedwagon cover for the John Lewis ad, Can't Fight This Feeling and Happier.

The last, epic number was, of course, Pompeii, with everyone getting down - and up - for it together.

It was clearly an emotional night for the band, and they showed their appreciation to the crowd, who jumped as one, with their phones out, and, at the very end, they linked arms and turned to the stage together, bidding a fond and, what felt like, a slightly poignant farewell. It could have been a Friday night, or New Year's Eve.
