An Italian restaurant has closed suddenly with owners saying they need to take "time to reflect and reassess the business".

Managers of Unità 4 in Ashford cited struggles over the winter and spring months as the reason behind the decision, which has come as a shock to customers.

The unit in Elwick Place was opened in 2021 and run by chef Damiano Vecchio, whose vision for the restaurant was "offering the local community an authentic and traditional Italian restaurant".

Just two years later, the effects of Covid and the cost-of-living crisis has forced the eatery to close, although in a notice in the window says it hopes it will only be temporary.

A statement from Mr Vecchio and co-owner Ainara Mateu said: "It is with a very heavy heart that we are choosing to temporarily close our pride and joy.

"Our enthusiasm and dedication were met by a rollercoaster of events which soon created a perfect storm with the after-effects of Covid, Brexit, no government support and now, to make things worse, the ever challenging cost-of-living crisis.

"The surging inflation has created a catastrophic environment for us to keep open in."

The sign confirmed the business shut on February 5 but will remain available for private hire events and occasions.

"We feel very grateful and blessed to have been able to serve the local community and support our employees over this time," they said. "We are extremely sad to say goodbye to so many of you who have regularly supported Unità 4."

Fans of the restaurant have reacted to the news, expressing their sadness at seeing yet another town centre business shut its doors.

One said: "Really sad to read this. It's something we are seeing all too much of at the moment."

Another added: "Such as shame, we absolutely love it here, one of the few decent places to eat in Ashford."

This comes soon after Macknade, just a few doors down, closed suddenly.

Bosses from the upmarket food shop also blamed the cost-of-living crisis for having to scale back operations.

Unità 4 have said that despite the shut down, any outstanding gift vouchers can be refunded.
